The term parental alienation refers to a type of child alignment. It is defined as a family dynamic in which, as a result of undue influence by one parent (the “favoured parent”), a child has developed negative thoughts, feelings, and behaviours toward the other parent for no valid or reasonable reason.
The tactics used by the alienating parent include:
Divorce and separation are already difficult for families, and when alienating behaviors occur, the harm to children can be profound and long-lasting.
Children exposed to parental alienation may develop:
"You’ve got to be taught to hate and fear,
You’ve got to be taught from year to year,
It’s got to be drummed in your dear little ear—
You’ve got to be carefully taught!"
South Pacific Musical, Lyrics By Oscar Hammerstein
Not everyone who calls themselves a mental health expert in parental alienation is a true expert.
Titles alone do not guarantee expertise.
"Many mental health professionals who are not trained in PA often fail to recognize the prolonged, documented pattern of coercion, obstruction + institutional betrayal allowing the alienation to take root" - Dr. Steven Miller, MD.
